Some people love them, some hate them, but for me a hammock is the preferred way of sleeping outdoors short of Winter conditions.
They keep you off the bug ridden ground, keep you dry, and provide a much better rest IME and unless I absolutely need to be on the ground for security reasons, I’m running this setup 3 out of 4 seasons.
The setup above is about 40 inches off the ground and I have 6” below me to the ground, making it easy to roll out quickly if needed.
Leaning some branches against the ridge line would serve for even better camo while adding warmth to the overall setup.
Anyway, just a test of the GHB sleep system I thought I would share.
PROS
Quick setup, and even quicker with the new ridgline system.
Poncho covers enough to stay dry, the ground cloth can be used to cover feet or the Swagman Roll.
Found that I can use the tie outs on the poncho as a prussik on the ridge line for positioning, no toggles needed.
CONS
Broke another cheap aluminum tent peg in clay. Need to find better solution.
This is something I have gone back and forth on myself. In our AO, the ground is wet as often as it is dry. We also have Jurassic park levels of insects and such looking to drain every drop of blood they can from your body. So getting up off the ground can definitely be a huge plus. The flip side though is, and I admit it's partly a personal thing, I hate not having my rifle literally next to me when I'm asleep and I haven't found a way to comfortably keep one in my hammock with me. Another personal issue is, with my back situation, I find that I just can't get comfortable for long in a hammock. So yeah, I go back and forth...
Good points and write up.
On an unrelated note... I see you are a man of excellent taste. Always good to see a fellow Crossfire user.
